Few words in the medical profession evoke as much awe, anxiety, and fear as "open heart surgery". But while it is a serious procedure, recent advances have made it safer than ever, and many patient worries are founded on misconceptions and misunderstandings.
For example, the mere mention of heart transplantation - the most aggressive open heart operation - would fill many with dread. One of the biggest problems with organ transplantation is rejection of the transplant by the patient''s immune system. valgosocks
|In recent years, however, there has been significant advancement in the medicines that are used to prevent rejection. Approximately 85% of patients receiving a heart transplant can now expect to live for at least a year after the surgery.
